What is intrauterine insemination (IUI)?

An artificial insemination technique used for transferring sperm directly into the uterus in order to allow the sperm and egg to interact in close proximity. It bypasses the vaginal and cervical defense mechanisms of the female reproductive tract and allows better sperm delivery to the fallopian tubes. It is commonly employed when mild and moderate deficits are identified during semen analysis. IUI is typically used in conjunction with medications that increase the number of eggs per cycle and the triggering of ovulation. This combination of treatments allows us to have more targets for the sperm (i.e. eggs), perfect timing, and better sperm delivery.
