What is Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)?

An artificial insemination procedure in which a single isolated sperm cell is placed into a single isolated egg by penetrating the outer coatings of the egg. This technique is done in a lab and is used in cases where there are very low sperm numbers, motility, or morphology. ICSI is also used for patients who have had previous in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles with failed fertilization.
