Depending on the type of azoospermia (obstructive vs non-obstructive) surgical procedures such as TESA and microTESE can be suggested for retrieving sperm and searching for functional sperm suitable for IVF or ICSI. The chances of identifying such sperm cells depend on the quantity of such sperm in the testicles, which in turn depends on the underlying cause of the azoospermia.
